Four fire safety questions every business owner should ask

No matter what kind of business you’re in, now is as good a time as any to remember just how devastating fires can be and what steps you can take towards making sure you never have to deal with them. This month’s blog takes a look at the basics – four questions you should be asking yourself to make sure you, your business and your employees are safe.

Let’s jump right in!

Are your fire risks assessed accurately?

When it comes to a businesses’ fire risk, you can find a pretty big range. Some have a lot of risk, others have almost none at all. But no matter how many or how few, they all need to be properly assessed so the proper prevention measures can be implemented. Local fire marshals can help you with it as well as local commercial fire safety firms like ours.

What’s your emergency plan?

So many businesses – as we’ve discussed in the past – don’t have a plan and absolutely need to have one. We recommend not only having an evacuation plan, but also having a quick annual/bi-annual fire training so they know how to use fire extinguishers and care for themselves in the event something awful happens.

Do you have the right equipment?

Some spaces need full-blown fire suppression and sprinkler systems. Others just need a few fire extinguishers. Regardless of how much or how little you need, make sure you have it. And make sure your people know how to access it and use it. And even more important than – that you have 2 or 3 people on staff who can occasionally take a look at the equipment to see if anything needs to be replaced, is showing signs of wear and tear or is in need of maintenance.

Do you have inspections scheduled regularly?

Prevention is always key to avoiding the worst, and making sure your system – no matter how big or small it might be – should always be inspected to make sure it’s working properly. It’s also important to make sure you’re up to code – so be sure to schedule regular inspections once a year to make sure everything is up to scuff.
